Virginia
Civil War Trails Markers installed in Lynchburg!
On
December 5, 2002 seven Virginia Civil War Trails markers were installed
throughout Lynchburg. This set of markers has been in the works for
nearly two years.
Markers were installed at Sandusky, the Quaker Meeting House, Fort
Early, Fort McCausland (Agudath Sholom Synagogue), Spring Hill Cemetery,
and a hospital building that is now home to Morris Construction Co.
A marker for downtown Lynchburg will be installed along 9th Street
once the construction there is completed.
The markers are part of the highly successful Virginia Civil War Trails
program which hosts over 300 markers throughout Virginia.

We
have many partners in this endeavor and it could not have succeeded
without their invovement. Thanks to, Dot Hartless & the Spring
Hill Cemetery Association, Chip and Crystal Morris Morris Construction
Co, Nancy Blackwell Marion The Design Group, Jim Swisher &
the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church and Mr. Richard Lerner &
Agudath Sholom Synagogue. Special thanks to Tom Ledford who wrote
the marker text and selected the photographs.

The
day the markers were installed was the day after Lynchburgs
first heavy snowfall of the season which made for a cold day. After
some discussions it was decided to install the markers despite the
weather.

The
installation went smoothly and received news coverage from WSET-TV,
the Commerce Business Monthly, and The News & Advance.

A
crew of three from Richmond installed the markers. They were Mitch
Bowman, Executive Director of the marker program, and his staff, Gary
Hamlet and Jason Shaffer. Our many thanks to these gentlemen for braving
the cold weather to install our markers.
