Researching History

My name is Cody Ramsey and I am a Junior Criminology major at the University of Lynchburg. I began working here at Historic Sandusky in March of 2019, and it has quickly become one of the best jobs I have had. Starting out, I was able to transcribe historical Civil War letters which gave me a great insight into the daily lives of soldiers and civilians in the 19th century.

Throughout my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to try my hand at a few different tasks and projects at Sandusky. In addition to the transcriptions, I was able to be a part of a large research project involving the facilities in Lynchburg during the Civil War. I got to research the railways, hospitals and now the businesses that existed in Lynchburg throughout the 19th century. It has been an unforgettable experience to be able to take this look at my hometown through a historical lens.

Aside from that work, I was also trained to give tours of the Sandusky home. This aspect of my job has given me a more personal connection with the property and its intriguing history, as well as with the guests who visit us here at Historic Sandusky.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would highly recommend Historic Sandusky to any undergraduate or graduate student looking for a position through the University. Although my major is not directly linked to my work here at Historic Sandusky, it has still been able to help me in a variety of ways. Namely, the researching and logging aspect of working here has greatly contributed to that of my own degree. Even if History is not your degree of choice, you might be surprised at how this job can still relate to and improve whatever career path you have chosen to follow.
